Brandon's Christmas Program

I would like to apologize to begin with for the quality of my pictures and videos! They are very poor and I wish I had a better camera, but my luck with cameras don't allow me a nice one.

Brandon had his first grade Christmas Program. He was so cute standing there singing. He would blow me kisses and bowing between the poems and songs. Then later on he kept writting in the air trying to talk to me. He definately stood out! These first couple of ones were from the morning Assembly, and they sang to the whole school.

Then tonight they performed for the family. Brandon had a very hard time with his vest to begin with, and wouldn't leave it alone! Grandma and Grandpa Walker, Uncle Derek, Aunt Rose, Uncle Wayne and Aunt Melissa came to watch! We were so happy to see them come, and Brandon was very happy!

Aunt Melissa saved the day with her ipod. Nathan got to watch a movie, after he was done standing on the chair yelling and waving at Brandon.

Kimball spent half the time runnng around and the the other half on Grandma Walker's lap.

Afterwards Nathan wanted to go to class with Brandon, and was very mad at me when I didn't let him go.

But then he decided that sitting on the stage that they sang on would be just as fun.

Then everyone came back over to the house and we chatted for a minute. Then they left to get more Christmas shopping done.

For some reason I can't get my video to load. But trust me when I say they sounded great!

Dear Santa

Dear Santa,

I have been a very good this year and have worked hard to be nice. I think that I deserve a present or two this year. I was told that you have asked the Fat Quarter Shop to help you out this year and they have gladly accepted your request.

I would like to request this beautiful Layer Cake from the Aster Manor collection. I just love the beautiful colors and the deep hues it shows.

And if you find that I have been extra nice this year I would love to have a Jelly Roll to match! I could make such a beautiful quilt for myself with it! I have been working hard to make the budget stretch and have made many pretty quilts for loved ones, but none for me!

As usual I will make sure that there are some cookies and milk left for you by our fire place, and be asure that there will be no fire to worry about. Please say hi to Dasher for me! He is my favorite and I find him rather Dashing!

Love,
Crystal Hendrix

Asperger Syndrome

Many of you know that Brandon was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome a few years ago. In the beginning it was hard to see that he was different besides not being able to sit down at all. But after finding out, we did everything that we could to help him out. He has improved so much that he is almost a different child, but even now you know that he is different.

Brandon had been having problems at school lately making friends and catching social cues. He has told me that the worst thing at school is making friends. My poor baby, and then you wonder why. Have I done something wrong to make him the way he is? Did I not let him play with other children as much? These are just a few of the many questions that have run through my head over the years. At times I come to the point where I have accepted the diagnosis and just work hard to help him in any way I can, an then at other points I am just floored on finding out that he is different.

My Mother in law is always reading and has very good taste in books, so when she suggested that I read "Look Me in the Eye: My Life with Aspergers"  I thought okay, that's nice, I will get to it when I can. But recently I finally picked it up after having it for a few months. I read the first chapter and just cried. This man describing how he thought and felt struck me hard! Just the littlest things that we take for grated, thinking that everyone knows! But he did exactly what Brandon has done. I have come to understand Brandon so much more by reading this book.

I would highly suggest anyone read this if they are curious about Asperger's Syndrome which is on the Autism spectrum or if you want to know Brandon more. I haven't read the whole book yet, but I am getting there. This man had a very hard childhood as it was and I have been struggling with it. But I would recommend this book to anyone.

I know that there are more books out there, written by those who have Aspergers. My heart just goes out to these people. When they were little, they were treated badly for being different because we didn't know about Aspergers, and just how they thought. I thank my Heavenly Father that Brandon was born in a time when we knew why he was different and have developed ways for us to better understand Brandon's world. There is no cure for Asperger's Syndrome, and I personally don't want one. Brandon is who he is with this syndrome and his little quirks has made him Brandon.

Now my second son, Nathan has High Functioning Autism. It is different from Aspergers but the same in areas. Nathan has struggled more with speech, which those with Aspergers don't. When you compare Brandon to Nathan they are so similar but night and day different. I am not looking forward to next year when Nathan goes into 1st grade, but as with Brandon, I love Nathan and wouldn't change him for the world.

If anyone has any questions about autism, please let me know. I don't claim to know anything, but I do know more than what is said on news channels. There is no set cause for autism and there is no set cure for autism. But I do hope that when you see a mother in a store and she has a screaming child at her feet, or a child walking next to her flapping their arms, please don't judge....because that has been me.

More Progress Done

Today I have taken it easy and have worked on Christmas presents all day. It was nice to be able to sew in my free time. I had a lot because I skipped my chores today. I mean come on, who likes to do dishes?

I made two more patchwork dresses for my nieces in Post Falls, Idaho. They have been growing like weeds lately so I really hope that they will fit!

I used Moda Nature's Notebook

and Moda's Love U. I only had a charm pack of each and I needed to alter the dress to make them bigger, so I went and bought some fabric that matched it nicely. I think it looks good.

Now I have a few more Christmas presents to make, but it won't take me very long at all. I just have 4 quilts ready to quilt and 1 still to make, but I need to get more batting. We will see if I can get my UFO's done before the New Year.

Even though I didn't do much cleaning today I can get it done tonight. I took Travis to the airport so he could fly to North Carolina to help a very important client. They really need to make a good impression and so they sent Travis. One good thing is no matter what he won't be fired, but it would be really nice if he could impress this client. The poor boys were really sad to see Dad go, I am not sure if they completely understood, but I am still with them so they are fine. We will pick him up late tomorrow night at the airport. So I can have another nice long night of quilting tomorrow. Which means I need to get all my chores done quickly.

200th Post

This is my 200th post! I am very excited that I have made it this far, sounds kinda weird, but I have never claimed to be normal.

I have been very busy this weekend, and have been working really hard! But one thing that I am very proud of is that I have finished Crazy Mom Quilt's sample quilt along. I made this quilt for my mom. She sent me some fabric and told me to go to town. I think she will really like this quilt.

I took down our prayer rug that Travis's brother brought back from Afghanistan, and hung the quilt. It is really cold outside otherwise I would have gone outside.
The back of the quilt. I thought I had more of the green material but I didn't and I had to improvise. I wish I had made the back more interesting.

Then I was looking at the many blogs that I like, and found some cute and easy crocheting pieces. Over at the Royal Sisters they have some really cute projects. So I decided to make some. I even made them for our Christmas ordaments this year.
(I have to improvise when it comes to hanging the stockings since I don't have a ledge to hang them from)

The pretty Christmas tree

The pretty Star

Then I of course had a little helper helping me this morning. Although when I took his picture he posed a frown!

I guess he is a typical two year old. He isn't usually this grouchy.

Then for the last bit, I received my prize from the Sew Mama Sew Giveaway earlier this month. I am not sure what I am going to make with it, but I am really excited to try. Thank you again Anne, from FilmandThread.
